Dr Deoman Gurung, Consultant psychiatrist, uk I run purely for enjoyment and to support my mental and physical wellbeing. Now that I'm past 40, chasing personal bests or speed no longer holds much appeal. Instead, I value running as a conduit for meeting people I'd otherwise never encounter in daily life. Just today, I connected with six different individuals, listened to their stories, and learned a great deal. As a consultant psychiatrist, I view these new challenges as a deliberate way to foster neuroplasticity through novel experiences. My goal going forward is to tackle races I've never attempted before. As part of that mission, I recently completed the Merseyside Tunnel 10K in 47:20. It was a unique course with distinct start and finish lines; I had hoped to run back through the tunnel in reverse, but the narrow passage prohibits that, so I took the train. Between the walk from parking to the start and from the station after, I ended up adding an extra 8km on foot. This marks my 61st 10K race, alongside 32 half marathons and 13 marathons/ultras since 2022. I don't categorize them—I embrace everything from road and trail to fell running. Total mileage this week: 71km, plus two gym sessions and a swim.
