Early diagnosis of hearing loss can change a child’s life Today, we join millions around the world in marking #WorldHearingDay, an opportunity to reflect and raise awareness about something essential to quality of life: hearing. This year, the World Health Organization highlights an important theme: hearing care for all children. Around 90 million children aged 5-19 live with a hearing loss, and according to WHO, over 60% of cases are preventable through early screening, safe listening practices, vaccination and prompt treatment of ear infections. As Dave Gordey, Ph.D., Director of Pediatric Audiology and Research at Oticon, explains: “Early diagnosis ensures timely access to hearing technology and intervention, while giving families the opportunity to make informed decisions early. Wearing a hearing aid supports the child’s speech, language and cognitive development. It prevents months, or even years, of missed auditory input and reduces the risk of future educational and psychosocial challenges.” Parents, caregivers and teachers can play a key role in early detection. Look out for signs if a child: - Frequently asks for repetition - Struggles with attention or school performance - Complains of ear pain or has discharge - Shows delayed speech or language development At Demant, we have worked for decades to improve hearing care for children and to ensure that children can take part in everyday social, physical and learning activities, fully and confidently. #worldhearingday #lifechanginghearinghealth
