The first wristwatches—especially the earliest luxury timepieces—were designed for women. In the 19th century, while men still relied on pocket watches, time found its place on the wrist as an object of elegance and adornment. For instance, Abraham Louis Breguet created one of the first known wristwatches in 1810 for the Queen of Naples. Time first lived on the wrist as a jewel. And yet, when we look at the greatest names shaping the industry— Adrien Philippe & Antoni Patek, Jules Louis Audemars & Edward Auguste Piguet, Georges Edouard Piaget, Franck Muller, Richard Mille… we see a legacy largely shaped by men. Perhaps that is why watchmaking has long been told through a male-dominated narrative. Yet the irony remains: it was women who first carried time, transforming it into a statement of style. Today, a watch is no longer just a technical object, nor merely a jewel. Time has become part of identity.
