For millions of people, the roads are not just a piece of infrastructure - but a workplace. From truck drivers and road maintenance crews to police officers, firefighters, and emergency responders, public roads are among the most demanding workplaces. Yet the risks these workers face are often underestimated. The DEKRA Road Safety Report 2026 "Working in Road Traffic" examines the challenges of working on and around roads through the perspectives of accident analysis, traffic psychology, vehicle engineering, infrastructure, and legislation. Our research demonstrates that intelligent transport systems, advanced driver assistance systems, and safer infrastructure can make a real difference. But lasting improvements require more than technology alone. Safer roads depend on the combined efforts of policymakers, employers, infrastructure providers, vehicle manufacturers, and every road user.
