Growing up deaf, Deakin Institute for Health Transformation researcher Ramas McRae understands the barriers his community faces and the consequences when support isn’t accessible. Now, through his PhD research here at Deakin, he’s helping shine a light on the mental health challenges experienced by Deaf Australians. In a survey of 340 Deaf participants, around 50% reported experiencing suicidal ideation. His research also found that deaf students who attended mainstream schools were significantly more likely to experience adverse mental health outcomes later in life. But for Ramas, the research is only the beginning. From working directly with remote communities to pushing for greater visibility of sign language in public life, his work is grounded in one goal: creating meaningful change led by and for the Deaf community.
