Are the Taylorist performance managements systems that managers cleave to in fact not the solution to today’s uncertainties but perhaps instead a major cause of the problems they confront, stifling imagination and obliterating meaning? In confronting uncertainty, today’s leaders seem drawn more to excruciatingly detailed, efficient short term thinking than to bolder, brighter thoughts. This frequently strikes me as exactly the wrong instinct, a strategy driven by a need for control and a lack of imagination."
