Joyful conspirator in making math more meaningful, fun, enjoyable and powerful in all students lives – especially those from groups our systems have historically under-supported. Come join me!
Every year about 500k students take College Algebra - the single college course with the highest DFW rate. Many (most?) of those students would be better off in course better aligned with their interests, like a high-quality Quantitative Reasoning course. (And we would all benefit from a more quantitatively literate population!) Part of the problem is that QR covers very different material at different institutions. Because of that, it's not perceived as a rigorous math course. Help us fix this! Transforming Post-Secondary Education in Mathematics wants to better understand the range of topics, perspectives, and aims in these terminal courses for non-STEM majors - with titles like Quantitative Reasoning, Liberal Arts Math, Survey of Math, etc. We’re looking for faculty who have taught such courses and are willing to share their course materials—including class activities, syllabi, quizzes, exams, and final assessments. Our goal is to use those materials to get a clearer, more comprehensive picture of how QR courses are structured and taught across institutions. The materials will not be used outside of this project, they won't be used to train any AI system, and no instructor names will be shared publicly. We plan to publish high level findings and to use those to further elevate QR courses as legitimate options. Willing to help? Please send materials (compressed if needed) to [email protected]. As a thank-you for your time and willingness to contribute, all participants will be entered into $100 gift card raffle.
