Today, on Trans Day of Visibility, I’m sharing something important about who I am. I have come to understand that I am a transgender woman. It has had been a journey to get here, taking time, self-reflection, and honesty with myself, even when it has felt uncomfortable and scary. At the same time, embracing my true self has brought a sense of joy and rightness to my life that I am truly grateful for. I’m choosing today to be open about this because visibility matters, both for me and for others finding their way. I feel fortunate to live in Maryland, where there are strong protections in place, and that has helped me feel safe coming out. I know many trans people don’t have that privilege and I am standing up for them as well today. I also want to share that I go by Daphne now, and use she/her pronouns. I understand that it will take time for people to adjust and I want you to know that I appreciate your effort and respect. I’m grateful for your support, understanding, and kindness. The support I’ve received has meant a lot and gives me hope for the future. Thank you for being a part of my journey.
