Sudanese refugees in Chad are already struggling with trauma and extremely difficult living conditions. The extraordinary heat this summer is making their daily lives even more challenging. More than one million refugees live in camps in remote areas of eastern Chad, and 87% are women and children. Access to basic necessities such as food and water is severely limited in a country already grappling with natural disasters, regional conflict, and food insecurity. Host communities in Chad are also under immense pressure. Much of the population lacks access to electricity and has little respite from the extreme heat. Engagement in meaningful employment is limited, while domestic tensions and gender-based violence are increasing. In Chad, we provide refugees and host communities with food, water, hygiene items, and protection services. However, funding is at an alarmingly low level, leaving many people without the support they urgently need. Our Head of Emergencies calls on institutional donors to recognize the challenges faced by a generous host country such as Chad and to reprioritize international aid so that assistance can reach those who need it most.
