Days of intense monsoon rain have caused widespread flooding and landslides across the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. In one week, nearly 800 mm of rain was recorded in parts of Cox’s Bazar. Across DRC-supported camps alone, there were 343 landslides, more than 1,500 damaged or destroyed shelters, and 564 displaced households. The emergency has also claimed 17 lives, including five children killed when a landslide struck a learning facility in Camp 5. DRC staff, partners, and refugee volunteers have been working around the clock to assess damage, share early-warning and safety information, support families to relocate, and connect affected people with urgent assistance. Yet continued rainfall, unstable slopes, damaged infrastructure, and overcrowded temporary shelters are placing already vulnerable families at further risk. Urgent funding is needed to sustain the emergency response, repair damaged shelters and critical infrastructure, and ensure that affected families can access essential assistance and protection. 🎥 This video documents both the scale of the destruction and the efforts under way to protect lives in one of the world’s most densely populated refugee settlements.
