Strictly automotive pro advice and insight: Current engine failures have one root cause, but multiple contributing factors. Did you know that every fluid change an OEM recommends during the life of a vehicle has a negative impact on their EPA compliance score? That’s why you see the ‘lifetime’ fluid claims which is an absolute fallacy. All hydraulic fluids break down under pressure and heat plus they suspend wear particles which in turn causes accelerated wear when not changed. Here’s the ideal fluid change intervals for all who want to make their vehicles last. Simply put, all fluids changed every 30,000 miles under normal usage and 15,000 miles under heavy service (hauling an RV, heavy boat, construction/work, etc.). The exception is engine oil changes/LOF which should be 3,000 miles for conventional, 5,000 miles synthetic blend, and 7,500 miles full synthetic with premium oil filters (Mobile 1, Bosch, Pure 1, etc.). Yes, I’m including coolant, hoses, and belts at the 30,000 mile interval as well. Diesels differ only with engine oil and possibly coolant service intervals. Change your high quality paper engine air filter every second oil change, but inspect it every oil change. Skip the gauze filters as they all allow excessive amounts of dirt to enter the engine. Fuel filter(s) every second oil change for diesels and every 15,000 miles for gasoline engines. Don’t forget your cabin air filter at 7,500-10,000 miles on average. Who wants Legionnaire’s disease? In short, the old ways remain the gold standard devoid of EPA and OEM games.
