US moves to stifle EV battery imports from mainland China. Great analysis by Dhruva Gogoi. about the EV Industry challenges. The US and EU are increasingly adopting protectionist measures against mainland China's dominance in the EV supply chain. The US announced new tariffs on EVs, lithium-ion batteries, and critical minerals from China, significantly increasing by 2024 and 2026. These measures aim to prevent cheaper Chinese imports from undermining American companies and protect substantial US investments in developing a reliable EV supply chain. Despite these efforts, the US remains heavily dependent on China for key minerals, and new tariffs may hinder access to cost-effective technologies like lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Retaliatory measures from China could further disrupt the US EV industry. This shows the US needs to support more underground mining of minerals in terms of domestic expansion, at the same time there is the need to align with partners or countries that support policies that are similar with Americas values. https://lnkd.in/gk3K-4FN
