Volunteers are essential members of our community — sharing their time, empathy, and perspective in support of our mission and in service to patients, families, and staff across the Institute. During Volunteer Appreciation Week, we proudly celebrate the many individuals who help make Dana-Farber a more compassionate, connected place. Frank Liu, a volunteer in the Eleanor and Maxwell Blum Patient and Family Resource Center, was inspired to give back after witnessing the power of supportive care resources during his family’s cancer experience. “I’m so lucky to be touched every week by the kindest patients, even in brief moments on the other end of a phone,” he says. “One moment that stuck with me was seeing the visible relief on a caregiver’s face when she discovered materials on cancer finances and nutrition — realizing that what she was going through was understood and supported.” Marianna Tsolias, another volunteer with the Patient and Family Resource Centers, also draws on her personal connection to Dana-Farber. After her father received care here, she felt moved to contribute to the same environment of hope and compassion. “Volunteering has deepened my appreciation for small acts of kindness,” she says. “It’s helped me grow in empathy and reinforced my commitment to making a difference — with purpose, compassion, and care.” Helen Wang, a volunteer with Dana-Farber’s Hands-on Care Program, offers comfort and connection through weekly hand massages for patients. “It’s one of the best experiences I’ve had,” she shares. Volunteering has given her a renewed perspective on the collaborative spirit that defines cancer care at Dana-Farber. “Everyone works together for one goal. It is inspiring.” Susan Herlihy joined Dana-Farber’s Adult Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) to give back in honor of the team who supported her through cancer treatment. Diagnosed at age 38 while raising two young children, Herlihy found healing not just through surgery, but through the compassionate care and emotional support she received after treatment. Today, she helps advocate for mental health care and ensures other patients know about the supportive services available to them. “This is how I pay it all forward,” she says. These are just a few of the many volunteers who make a lasting difference at Dana-Farber every day. To all who give their time and heart to our community: thank you. Your impact is felt in every conversation, every gesture, and every step forward.
