We have the immense pleasure to announce that our colleague and friend, Dr. Bassirou Souleymane, has successfully defended his PhD thesis at the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp. His research “Tuberculosis and Rifampicin-Resistant TB Management in Niger: Challenges and Innovative Strategies”, examines approaches to managing difficult-to-treat TB in Niger, comparing the efficacy and side effects of different treatment options. Through his approach, Dr. Bassirou achieved high cure rates for drug-resistant tuberculosis through safer regimens and optimised use of the few available new anti-TB drugs. His efforts show that the management of drug-resistant tuberculosis is feasible, even in resource-limited settings like Niger. We warmly congratulate Dr. Bassirou and look forward to continue a partnership that will make a lasting difference in global health.
