Daily Facts® : Texas businessman Gordon Hartman turned a personal moment into a global example of inclusive design. After noticing his daughter Morgan, who has cognitive disabilities, struggling to play with other children at a hotel pool, he began rethinking how public spaces often exclude people with disabilities. He later sold his homebuilding company and invested tens of millions of dollars to help create Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, which opened in 2010. The park was built from the ground up to be fully accessible, with wheelchair friendly rides, sensory aware play areas, and staff trained to support guests with physical and cognitive challenges. The mission goes beyond one park. The Hartman family foundation also developed Morgan’s Inspiration Island, an ultra accessible splash park where waterproof wheelchairs are provided free of charge. A defining feature is that individuals with special needs receive free admission, removing both physical and financial barriers.
