Solving Unsolvable Problems
Students, if you write a thesis or a paper in LaTex, which most of you do, don't write multiplications as an asterix ("*") or and ("x") in equations. Use a dot ("·") if you really need one, or leave it out completely. . BAD: 4*3 = 12 GOOD: 4·3 = 12 . BAD: 4x(log(y)-b) GOOD: 4(log(y)-b) UGLY: 4·(log(y)-b) . Then again, ugly is sometimes needed for clarity. The only way in which you can use ("x") for multiplication, is as an illustration of dimensions: "a container of 4x3x10 meters". . Opinions may differ. #thesis #research #academic #uva #writing #algorithms #heuristics
