Co-creating Sustainable Development | Water, Wastewater, Environment & Communities

Can water kiosks secure long-term access to water in underserved areas? That's the question Julian Rieder explored in his thesis, supervised by Dr. Dorothee Spuhler (OST) and Prof. Dr. Eva Lieberherr (ETH Zurich) and with financial support by ETH for Development - ETH4D — building on OST's ongoing WASH work in Liberia in close collaboration with the Swiss NGO BTFS. Through interviews, field observations, and close collaboration with the local community, the study found that sustainable operation hinges on: šŸ”¹ strong local stakeholder involvement šŸ”¹ clearly defined roles and responsibilities šŸ”¹ enforcement of legal agreements The recommendations were validated in a workshop with local experts and are now summarized in a policy brief, offering a context-sensitive model to help decision-makers design water projects with lasting impact. šŸ‘‰ Link to the Policy Brief: https://lnkd.in/eEwBNf5v Felix Franz Walz ETH for Development - ETH4D Departement Technik OST EEU an der OST Sandec-Eawag
