🌟 Throwback to Curtin’s English Language Courses for International Students! 🌟 In the 1970s, Curtin’s School of Social Science, through the Department of English and Language Studies, was making a mark in international education. 📚 In 1972, the Special English Language Fellowship (SELF) course commenced. Students from Thailand, Portuguese Timor, Japan, Indonesia, and Laos joined, learning English in a professional context. Part of the Colombo Plan—and open to private students—the course was popular and successful. By 1974, it was even more widely embraced, with the community taking an active interest in and engaging with the students. ✏️ In 1975, the department began teaching Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). Twenty-three students from Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands enrolled in the first TESL graduation course, earning a special certificate carrying the academic seal of the Institute. Many were already practising English teachers in their home countries and became actively involved in Western Australian community life through excursions and events. 🌿 The 1974 Annual Report also noted the second year of a summer school course in the Aboriginal dialect of Ngaanyatjarra, showing Curtin’s early commitment to language diversity. #CurtinUniversity #CurtinThrowback #CurtinLife CRICOS code: 00301J.
