Anexa Alfred (Miskitu), President of the UN Human Rights Council’s Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), has denounced the torture and enforced disappearance of renowned Indigenous rights defender Brooklyn Rivera (Miskitu) at the hands of the Nicaraguan government. Rivera died while in the custody of the Nicaraguan State after nearly three years of arbitrary detention. Alfred also confirmed that eight of Rivera’s relatives were arbitrarily detained and forcibly disappeared after attempting to recover his body. Their whereabouts remain unknown to this day. “Taupla [guide in the Miskitu language] was slowly killed from the moment he was abducted, and nearly three years later we can see, when his lifeless body was displayed, evidence of the torture he was subjected to continuously,” said Anexa Alfred. #ProtectIndigenousDefenders #JusticeForIndigenousDefenders #ProtectTheProtectors #DefendTheDefenders
