The rapid integration of AI into human resource management promises unprecedented efficiency, yet it compels us to ask: are we fully grasping the subtle, profound shifts it orchestrates in employee sentiment and loyalty? The latest study co-authored by Professor Sungwoo Choi, Assistant Professor of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at CUHK Business School, uncovers critical workplace dynamics. This research provides vital empirical proof of heightened turnover intentions, lower commitment, and retaliatory feelings when non-human systems decide employees’ livelihoods. For business leaders and the industry at large, understanding these findings is essential to cultivate a positive employee experience and safeguard employee morale and commitment. The study identifies a distinct cultural paradox: relying on AI in collegial environments will lead to severe backlash, viewing AI-driven quantification as a betrayal of support. To safeguard brand equity, companies can design hybrid systems where AI serves only in an assistive capacity for voluminous screening tasks, ensuring consequential, high-stakes decisions are ultimately made by people.
