What this summer meant for the Reef. 🐠 The latest Reef Snapshot, a joint initiative between the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Australian Institute of Marine Science and us, has just been released. It provides a summary of conditions on the Great Barrier Reef throughout summer, how these conditions impact coral and Reef health, and the actions being taken to help coral health. Over the past summer, parts of the Reef were exposed to above‑average water temperatures, marine heatwaves, flooding and crown‑of‑thorns starfish outbreaks. These combined pressures led to widespread coral bleaching, particularly in the Far Northern and Northern regions, with some inshore reefs experiencing coral mortality after heavy rainfall and flood plumes. Importantly, the snapshot shows that while impacts have been significant, conditions and outcomes vary across regions. In‑water surveys indicate lower levels of bleaching in Central and Southern areas, reinforcing the value of detailed, long‑term monitoring alongside aerial surveys.
