The bigger the battery, the faster the charge. At least that's the promise of quantum batteries. Our researchers have worked with RMIT University and University of Melbourne to build a world-first proof-of-concept quantum battery, showing how energy can be stored, charged and released using the strange rules of quantum physics. As the lead of the Quantum Batteries Team, Dr James Quach, explains here, the result is a battery that charges faster when it gets bigger; something impossible with conventional tech. While we won't be seeing quantum batteries in stores any time soon, the promise of quantum batteries is exciting.
