Not too hot, not too cold, just right. š¦ Thatās exactly how brown tiger prawn populations in northern Australia need ocean conditions to thrive. We know that ocean warming is causing fish along most coastlines to move polewards in search of cooler water. But what about species, like brown tiger prawns, in shallow, tropical gulfs and semi-enclosed marine ecosystems where travelling to cooler waters isnāt an option? Our scientists are filling this knowledge gap with new research showing that a combination of climate drivers, largely influenced by El NiƱo or La NiƱa events, are boosting some tropical species populations while crashing others. This research is important as it helps us to anticipate, prepare for and respond to climate events in tropical marine gulfs and straits vital for biodiversity, fisheries and local communities.
