Hold the phone! š We're helping improve the resilience of mobile telecommunications during extreme events. Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of natural hazard events, such as bushfires and storms. These events can cause substantial damage and disruption to the critical infrastructure and essential services that our society and economy rely on. Our recently completed Telecommunications Resilience Investment Pilot (TRIP) aimed to build improved shared understanding of mobile telecommunications system vulnerability and the collective actions and investment necessary to build resilience. We looked at resilience strategies for two case study areas in which telecommunication sites are at high risk of bushfire in Eurobodalla Shire Council (New South Wales) and East Gippsland Shire Council (Victoria). These places were selected as they are representative of common recurrent problem patterns, including being regional areas, at the edge of critical infrastructure networks, and with a large influx of tourists during the summer high-risk weather season The project was led by our Enabling Resilience Investment team with Value Advisory Partners and Climate KIC Australia, in close collaboration with Optus, and was funded by the National Emergency Management Agency through the Disaster Risk Reduction Fund.
