Dancing with the Flies. 🪰 We’re just beginning to unravel the complexities of courtship choreography more than 150 years since Charles Darwin introduced the idea of sexual selection – the concept that males give females information to identify their suitability as a partner through extravagant displays. In a recently published study, scientists mapped the 41 different dance moves of eastern Australian dune flies (Apotropina ornatipennis), comparing their dances against their degree of genetic divergence. They found that even when populations were isolated from one another, their dance routines stayed consistent.
