🚦 What if a traffic signal could prioritize emergency vehicles before they even reach a complex urban junction? A new signalized intersection is being built on Europaring near Leverkusen-Mitte (Wiesdorf). It will improve access to the surrounding urban area, including Q-Park City Center, and is part of a development aimed at improving accessibility of the adjacent eastern area. ➡️ The project requires a new traffic signal controller based on the OCIT-O standard. A key part of the solution is C-ITS-based priority control for emergency vehicles. Using Roadside Units (RSU) and Onboard Units (OBU), the system enables direct communication between emergency services and the intersection, allowing signal control to be adjusted before vehicles physically reach the junction. The controller will be integrated via OCIT-C into the existing SWARCO traffic management system, ensuring seamless integration with the current urban control infrastructure. Traffic engineering design, including traffic-dependent control logic (OMTC/OML), has been prepared by BERNARD Gruppe for road traffic engineering on behalf of the City of Leverkusen. Core delivered components include: ✔️ OCIT-O traffic signal controller (CROSS RS 4S 40 V) ✔️ RSU units for emergency vehicle priority ✔️ Video detection system (6 x cameras) ✔️ Full traffic signal infrastructure (15 x signal heads) ➡️ This is not a standalone intersection - it is a connected node within a cooperative urban traffic system. The project demonstrates how C-ITS, OCIT-based controllers, and existing traffic management platforms can be combined into a single operational environment at a standard urban junction. ➡️ From signal-based control to vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. The future of traffic management is no longer based solely on vehicle detection at intersections. It is built on real-time communication between vehicles, infrastructure and traffic management systems.
