One city, two perspectives. Muscat in Oman captured by the PIAST-M satellite 🛰️ The night-time image shows Al Sahwa Public Park with the park’s streetlights clearly visible. The daytime image captures the same area, where the airport stands out as one of the most distinctive infrastructure features. Night-time observations are carried out by satellites for a wide variety of purposes, including analysing urban development, monitoring access to electricity and assessing the impact of disasters. They also serve as a tool in the fields of security and defence. The images were captured using a telescope developed by the Centrum Badań Kosmicznych Polskiej Akademii Nauk, mounted on a HyperSat satellite platform manufactured by Creotech Instruments S.A. The entire image-processing workflow was carried out using Payload Processors, calibration and validation tools, and the Payload Data Ground Segment, all developed by our team. For publication purposes, the resolution of the images has been reduced fourfold. The #PIAST project is an example of effective cooperation between Polish science and industry. It is carried out by the Wojskowa Akademia Techniczna w Warszawie, acting as the consortium leader, in collaboration with Creotech Instruments S.A., Centrum Badań Kosmicznych PAN, Łukasiewicz - ILOT, Scanway S.A. and PCO S.A. The project is co-financed by the Narodowe Centrum Badań i Rozwoju under the #SZAFIR programme, initiated by the Ministry of National Defence.
