Infantino and FIFA: ‘the decision of Balogun was completely independent..’ Trump, meanwhile: “Think of if he (Infantino) didn’t allow Balogun to play.. There would have been even more controversy.. Another great decision by Gianni. You made a great decision there, Gianni.. Doesn’t get enough credit for it…” All perfectly cool. Just Trump thanking Infantino for his corruption. The same Infantino that the 211 member Federations will no doubt vote back in, next March. In recent days, around 200 of those Federations endorsed a fourth term for Infantino. This is why it took FBI intervention to clean the organisation up, before. Football can’t do it. Like all multilateral organisations, its weakness is the political nature of the appointments at National and continental level, which directly affects the way accountability is seen, and applied, at the global governing body. And very sadly, not enough high profile football players, current and former, their global union FIFPro nor coaches for that matter, all of whom have lived a whole life off the game, who owe the game everything, have raised the alarm. Either during Blatter’s era, or now. Global sport provides a lifetime of privileges. Provided one is comfortable with this.
