What does freedom mean? Today, many Nigerians would give the same answer: to know that the people I love will make it home safely. Democracy Day is often a time to reflect on our history, our institutions, and how far we’ve come as a nation. But for many families, freedom is the peace of mind that comes from hearing your child arrive safely at school. It’s knowing your loved ones can travel and return home. It’s being able to build a future without fear interrupting every plan. Over the past few weeks, we’ve watched heartbreaking stories unfold across the country. Families grieving, communities living with uncertainty, parents carrying fears no parent should have to carry. Moments like these remind us that progress isn’t only measured by economic growth, infrastructure, or elections. It’s also measured by how safe people feel in their homes, communities, and daily lives. As we mark Democracy Day, we are reminded that our greatest asset has always been our people. The neighbours who check in on one another, the communities that rally around those in need, the parents, teachers, healthcare workers, security personnel, and everyday Nigerians who continue showing up despite the challenges. Our greatest asset is our collective resolve. The belief that tomorrow can be better than today. The courage to keep building, keep hoping, and keep looking out for one another. Today, our hearts are with every family longing for peace, every community seeking safety, and every Nigerian working toward a more secure, stable, and prosperous future. Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria 🇳🇬
