The least engineering-like thing about Moronke Anifowose is that she's a lover girl. Which is funny because if you met her at work, you'd probably know her as one of the engineers behind Cowrywise Kids, the app helping children learn how to Plan, Save and Invest. You'd know she recently used Kotlin Multiplatform to build the app for both Android and iOS from a single codebase. You'd know she spends her days solving technical problems. What you probably wouldn't guess is that she thinks empathy is her greatest engineering skill. Moronke's journey into engineering started early. Her father was a computer engineer, so computers were a normal part of growing up. Computer Engineering wasn't available at the university she chose, so she studied Computer Science instead and found her way into software engineering. One of her earliest projects was an app for tailors. Then there was the dating app 🌚. She and a group of friends built it from an idea they had. People used it, people met... and eventually, people got married. 🤯 For Moronke, success isn't just downloads, uptime, or performance metrics. It's seeing people use something you built and knowing it made their lives better. That's why empathy is at the centre of how she works and why she believes the best products aren't always the most complex, but the ones that understand what people actually need. That mindset shaped the way she approached Cowrywise Kids. The challenge wasn't building an app. It was making financial education feel simple, fun, and accessible for children. Like many high-performing people, Moronke has also had to learn that caring deeply comes with limits. After experiencing burnout, she learned the importance of asking for help, communicating boundaries, and taking breaks before burnout forces one on you. Which brings us back to the lover girl thing. Moronke genuinely cares about people, experiences, community, and how products make people feel. Maybe that's what makes her such a good engineer. Because behind every great product is someone who remembers that the code isn't the point. People are.
