What does it take to keep a coastal capital from flooding through heavy rainfalls? 💧 In Copenhagen, part of the answer is being built down to 30 metres below our feet. Massive in scale – and in impact. The Svanemøllen cloudburst tunnel is a ten-kilometre underground tunnel system designed to move enormous volumes of water when severe cloudbursts hit. As part of the climate adaptation measures in the capital region, HOFOR, Frederiksberg Forsyning A/S and Novafos have joined forces to reduce flooding and improve water quality, and at COWI and Arkitema, we’re proud to support this ambition. Construction has now begun, creating what is, in essence, a hidden water motorway beneath the city.
