“Abolition of the death penalty has been one of the greatest achievements of the Council of Europe” – Secretary General, Alain Berset. Speaking at the World Congress against the death penalty in Paris today, the Secretary General added “Abolition is a victory, but not a guarantee, and should not be taken for granted”. The Council of Europe remains committed to working towards the universal abolition of the death penalty. On 2 July, the Council of Europe is organising a public side event at the World Congress focusing on the situation of the death penalty in Belarus and on the civil society and youth advocacy for its abolition in and outside the country.
