We’re thrilled to share new research by Deakin University, Turning Points for Children Experiencing Vulnerabilities: The Role of Outdoor Adventure (2026), which uses Cottage by the Sea's programs as a case study. The findings reinforce what we see in practice: outdoor adventure experiences can play a significant role in supporting the development of children and young people experiencing vulnerability. Three key themes emerged from the research – trust, risk-taking and hope – highlighting how structured, supportive adventure-based programs help young people build confidence, strengthen relationships and develop a stronger sense of future possibility. As one Cottage program participant simply but powerfully reflected: “I learnt that I got more in me than I thought… so I can do more things than I thought about.” At a time when access to these opportunities is under increasing pressure, this research is an important reminder of their value and impact. Adventure-based learning continues to be more than an experience – for many young people, it is a turning point. Read the paper here: https://lnkd.in/gvQV59xN
