If you’re still trying to figure out the best way to use AI, you’re not alone. #AI is a lot of things—but there are definitely things that it’s not. It’s not a computer. It’s not a calculator. And it’s not Google. We’ve all been trained for twenty years to type a few keywords into a search bar and get a list of results. But AI is built different. If you’ve ever given the same chatbot the same prompt and gotten different responses, you’ve seen how. AI works better when you give it context, examples, constraints, and a role to play. It gets sharper when you push back on its first answer instead of accepting it. The trick isn’t finding the perfect prompt for chatbots. It’s embracing the conversation. That’s what this series is for. We’ll share practical tips to help you work with AI more effectively—at your job, in your inbox, on the kind of tasks you do every day. Some weeks it’ll be a specific prompt worth trying. Other weeks it’ll be a technique, a mindset shift, or a small tweak that will help you get more out of it. Here’s Tip #1: Prompt like you’re talking to a person, not a computer. Let’s be clear: AI is not a person. (Sorry, “Claude.” We see through you). But it’s designed to respond and be engaged with more like a person than anything we’ve ever seen before. That’s what makes it feel so engaging—and so weird—all at the same time. Most people type one thing, read what comes back, and either use it or give up. The better move is to treat the first response as a starting point. Tell the AI what you liked, what you didn’t, what to keep, what to change. Two or three rounds of that will get you somewhere a single prompt never will.
