Anthropic shipped Claude Fable 5 on June 9 — its most capable generally available model and the first from the Mythos class to reach the public. The capability is not in question: 80.3% on SWE-Bench Pro, roughly an 11-point lead over the next model, a 1M-token context window, and day-one availability across GitHub Copilot, AWS Bedrock, and enterprise tools. But this isn't a "new model dropped" post. For teams shipping real software, what matters is the operational footprint — three strings attached that are planning items, not press-release bullets: 1. Cost — the free window closes June 23. Fable 5 is free on paid Claude subscriptions only through June 22, then converts to metered usage at $10 / $50 per million input/output tokens — roughly double Opus 4.8. That 14-day runway is your only no-cost window to measure it on the work your team actually owns. 2. Compliance — 30-day retention overrides your zero-retention deal. Anthropic now requires 30-day retention on all Fable 5 traffic, even for enterprises that previously negotiated zero retention. The data trains nothing and feeds only misuse-detection classifiers — but for regulated teams it's a blocker to clear before a single production prompt. 3. Consistency — a silent Opus 4.8 fallback. Built-in safeguards can route sensitive cyber, bio, or chemistry prompts to a more constrained model. You may pay Fable 5 rates and get a different answer. Log the model id on every call and alert on drift. The takeaway: adopt the best model on the market without inheriting its surprises. Own cost, compliance, and consistency before June 23 — while the window is open and before the defaults harden.
