One of the most consistent findings from our work with campuses is that students engage more readily when the pressure is low and the environment feels open. Formats like film discussions, informal Q&As, or creative activities create space where disagreement is possible without becoming polarizing. Humor and informality help defuse tension and encourage sustained participation. This doesn't mean avoiding serious topics. It means designing conditions where serious topics can actually be explored. Our guide, Engaging Students Across Difference, draws from initiatives at University of Virginia, College of Charleston, Providence College, and the University of Michigan to show how tone, structure, and framing shape who feels comfortable participating, and how honestly they engage.
