"When the conflict started in our area, my husband and I decided to flee with our two children... We walked for four days because I was pregnant." Nyota Mwenge's life was turned upside down when she had to flee her home last year, after fighting reached her village in the Democratic Republic of The Congo (DRC). DRC is home to one of the world's deadliest and most complex crisis, with an estimated 14.9 million people there needing humanitarian support following an escalation in violence in 2025. Nyota is among the 4.9 million people who have received support under the Strategic Assistance for Emergency Response (SAFER) - which is supported with humanitarian aid from the European Union and the UK Government and received funding from the US Government. One component of SAFER is providing unconditional cash support, which gives families the ability to meet their most urgent needs, if a functioning market is within reach. Nyota said this support provided some relief for her family and enabled them to buy essentials.
