"I know our problems will not be solved immediately, but this support will at least allow me to rest for a few days. My absolute priority is to pay for my wife’s medical treatment." Gulamu Ndaldi is going through a crisis. He has been displaced more than once from his home in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) amid the conflict, his wife is unwell and his failing eyesight has robbed him of his career as a teacher. Gulamu says that receiving cash support, as part of the Strategic Assistance for Emergency Response (SAFER) programme, has been a relief and has helped him to support his wife and seven children. The SAFER programme is supported with humanitarian aid from the EU in Emergencies and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and received funding from the US Government. The SAFER programme, established in November 2019, is a consortium of five international NGOs, bringing together Concern Worldwide, Mercy Corps, Norwegian Refugee Council, Acted and SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL to provide an effective and coordinated rapid response mechanism in eastern DRC. One component of SAFER is providing unconditional cash support to internally displaced people (IDPs), returnees and host communities who are in crisis. Cash is an effective mode of support as it gives families the ability to meet their most urgent needs, if a functioning market is within reach. https://bit.ly/4xLMJiC
