Jimmy Wales did not become a billionaire from Wikipedia (it's OK, the cash is still coming from another successful business). He also did not fill it with ads, clickbait or headlines such as: “You won’t believe what Thomas Jefferson did next.” Instead, he helped build one of the oddest and most useful things on the internet: a free encyclopedia, written by volunteers, argued over endlessly, corrected constantly, and somehow still trusted by millions. I love it and am happy to send him a few quid whenever his funding request email arrives. On this episode of The Fifth Court, Mark Tottenham BL speaks to Jimmy about neutrality, AI hallucinations, fake ISBN numbers, online trust, volunteer rules, platform liability and why Wikipedia works when so much else online feels like a shouting match in a burning skip. Hat tip to Mark for 'doorstepping' Jimmy at the recent Dalkey Book Festival. 'Carpe Diem' indeed. . Also in the Decisis Law Reports casebook, sponsored by Charltons Solicitors and Collaborative Practitioners: Mark and Peter Leonard discuss cases involving, “no foal, no fee”, drink-driving blood evidence, and a murder conviction quashed because the judge’s charge to the jury went too far. This is a big one. Make sure to share it with a simple REPOST. We'd also love to hear your comments on the many points raised by Jimmy.
