Maximilian I, was the only monarch of the Second Mexican Empire. He accepted an offer by Napoleon III of France to rule Mexico but after the French were defeated, the Mexican government captured and executed Maximilien for high treason. The Mexican victory in that battle led to what we know today is the celebration called Cinco de Mayo.
