Some Civil War veterans came home. They married, raised families, and tried to build ordinary lives after extraordinary experiences. John Shorey was one of them. After surviving the Civil War, he returned to Norridgewock, Maine, worked as a house painter, married widow Philena Hurd, and together they raised a blended family with six children. But the war's impact didn't end with Appomattox. Chronic illness followed John home, and he died in 1877 at just 46 years old. Today, his gravestone stands in Riverview Cemetery, a quiet reminder that history doesn't end when the fighting stops. One of the most rewarding parts of researching Company D is tracing these lives beyond the battlefield and restoring stories that have largely been forgotten. John and his brother Frank's remarkable journey is told in Episode 12, "The Reluctant Soldiers." šļø https://lnkd.in/eAuJpKwK #CivilWarHistory #PublicHistory #Microhistory #HistoryPodcast #Genealogy #MaineHistory #Storytelling #HistoricalResearch
