⚡ What's the cause around skyrocketing electricity bills? A common narrative in energy discourse is that the tech boom is single-handedly driving up utility costs. But new research from the Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) at Columbia | SIPA shows the real answer is more complex. While data centers and AI are accelerating demand growth, the research concludes that recent price increases reflect much broader, structural challenges facing the US power system—not just a single factor. In fact, large electrical loads have actually led to deflationary pricing in several locations. The real culprits behind accelerating prices? A combination of: --Aging infrastructure --Weaknesses in grid planning and permitting --Rising system investment needs --Economy-wide growth in electricity demand As CGEP Founding Director Jason Bordoff notes: “This research comes at a critical time when policymakers need informed policy solutions to better understand the factors behind increasing electricity prices, and address this challenge head-on.” CGEP has released new publications from Doug Arent, Robin Millican, David Sandalow, and Diego Rivera Rivota digging into these dynamics and offering actionable policy solutions across near, medium, and long-term horizons. 🔗 Read the full research and policy recommendations here: https://lnkd.in/grAMdVpF #EnergyPolicy #GridModernization #AI #DataCenters #ElectricityPrices #Sustainability #ColumbiaSIPA
