So pleased to see our paper out in #Science this week! Huge congratulations to Hiroshi Ichise, and the whole Germain lab team Emily Speranza, Anita Gola, Federica La Russa, PhD, Tibor Z. Veres and of course Ron for leading and mentoring this work. The project will always have a special place in my heart as we worked on it in the middle of COVID19 at NIH, masked and distanced, but with a wonderful team science approach. It was certainly not what I was expecting to be doing as a visiting ocular immunology researcher, but I learnt a huge amount and am proud to be able to have been able to contribute. The paper uses #IBEX imaging to elaborate spatial host-pathogen interactions and tissue damage in the lung and it still surprises me how over 50 broad immunosuppressive treatment approaches had almost no effect on influenza survival... except Type I IFN blockade or CD8 depletion at key timepoints.
