💡 Very interesting exchanges at the event "Towards the European Fifth Freedom and Global Competition: Voices from Science". 📌 Organised by the European Research Council (ERC) and the German National Academy of Sciences Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina, supported by National Academies from the Netherlands (KNAW - Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen), Slovakia (Slovenská akadémia vied / Slovak Academy of Sciences), Finland (Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia – The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters), and Cyprus (Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts), high-level speakers and panellists - among them Maria Leptin, Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva, President Bettina Rockenbach, President of the Jacques Delors Institute Enrico Letta, Rector Severine Vermeire – are discussing the role of the 5th freedom (the free movement of #knowledge) for Europe, how to address the current challenges for the research community and how science can contribute to a new European Knowledge Economy.    🖊️ Some key takeaways so far:  🔹 Scale-up, react to challenges quickly and make strategic choices are key for the future of #Europe; 🔹 The #science and research system in Europe must change, and become more agile (bureaucracy is very high, access to funding is slow, private investment must increase); 🔹 Need to improve pathways for citizen to support science, improve the knowledge circulation and valorisation. The trust in science is key for countries to support investments in R&I; 🔹 The 5th freedom will be key for the EU's single market, and allow to scale-up and accelerate the other freedoms (free movement of goods, services, people, and capital) #ERA #5thfreedom #singlemarket #research
