Your job search is probably costing you more than you think - and most people never reclaim a cent of it. If you're job hunting in Germany or Austria, your resume builder subscription, interview travel, application photos, and career coaching fees are tax-deductible. In France it applies when you opt for the frais réels regime. Switzerland applies mainly to those on unemployment benefits. Here's what the numbers look like: - 🇩🇪 Germany: deducted as Werbungskosten under §9 EStG. Even unemployed job seekers qualify - costs carry forward to future years. - 🇦🇹 Austria: the standard deduction is only €132/year, which means almost every receipt over that threshold saves you money. Software explicitly included. - 🇨🇭 Switzerland: applies mainly to those receiving unemployment benefits (Arbeitslosentaggelder) - explicitly confirmed in cantonal tax guidance. - 🇫🇷 France: the official tax bulletin (BOFiP) explicitly lists "frais de confection de CV" as deductible under frais réels. For context: in the US, the deduction was permanently eliminated in July 2025. In the UK and Canada, it never existed for employees. The DACH region and France are genuinely exceptional here. Example at a 30% marginal rate: a €30/month subscription (€360/year) returns ~€108 at tax time. Effective monthly cost: ~€21. Your actual savings depend on your marginal rate and country rules.
