The Fragile State of Catholic Growth According to Pew Research Center studies, “the percentage of U.S. Catholics has stabilized around 19%-20% since 2014, following a period of decline.” While this stabilization may appear encouraging on the surface, the deeper data reveal a troubling reality. Catholicism in America is not expanding—it is contracting through attrition. Pew reports that “Catholicism suffers high net losses from ‘religious switching,’ with 43% of those raised Catholic no longer identifying as such.” This means nearly half of those born into the Catholic faith eventually leave it. Even more alarming, “for every one person who converts to Catholicism in the U.S., roughly 8.4 people leave the faith, making it a ‘greater net loss’ than other Christian traditions.” No other major Christian group in America experiences such a steep decline. These numbers paint a sobering picture. Catholicism is not gaining ground—it is losing it.
