🇪🇺 CBAM in numbers: Imports, embedded emissions & costs in 2024 While U.S. tariffs dominate headlines, the EU is introducing its own trade tool to safeguard industrial competitiveness. From 2026, a carbon price will apply to imports, aligning their climate costs with those of EU producers under the Emissions Trading System (ETS). We analyse 2024 EU trade data to assess the scope and potential impact of Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM): 📦 €89 billion worth of goods (across 6 sectors) fall under CBAM – about 4% of all EU imports ☁️ 260 Mt CO2e emissions embedded in these CBAM imports – roughly  9% of total emissions in the EU 💶 €12 billion in added carbon costs under a fully phased-in CBAM, based on the 2024 average EU ETS price – equal to 31% of EU ETS auction revenues 🌍 Trade is becoming more complex—and more costly.
