Years ago I wrote a strange line in my annual review: "People are starting to follow me — and I don't have the title that says they have to." That's when it clicked. A manager has command and control. People comply because they report to you. People who *follow* you choose to. Nobody made them. That's a completely different level of power — and the only one that survives you losing the title. Authority gets compliance. Trust gets followers.
