In a linear economy, traceability ends at the consumer. In a circular economy, it continues beyond that point, tracking materials through post-consumer stages. In this white paper from the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Accenture, they explore how scaling traceability innovation is the key to unlocking the value of informal waste management. Why? The informal waste sector already recovers over 88 million tonnes of recyclables annually, but a gap in traceability prevents this capacity from scaling up globally. The paper highlights the urgency of the waste crisis, especially in emerging countries, where low-income nations dump or burn an estimated 93% of their waste due to lack of collection or infrastructure. Traceability makes the contributions of informal workers visible, creating a "map" for targeted investment, effective policy, and corporate action. Traceability innovations provide the data needed to formalize and finance this vast, effective workforce. Traceability solutions like ours 😇 with our ‘AI auditor’ automatically analyses the large amounts of data submitted by waste collectors and processors and looks for unusual patterns that may point to fraud. Achieving this transparency, in real-time across different types of data, such as photos, weight receipts and invoices, compared to traditional audits, greatly increases speed and confidence in the accuracy of reported waste volumes. We're proud as punch to be included in this White Paper as example innovator using technology to help provide the data needed to formalize and finance this vast, effective informal waste sector workforce.
