Today we launched Beyond the Election Cycle: Activating Long-Term Governance in Australia. 🚀 It has been a privilege to lead this work over the past four months, alongside an incredible group of collaborators and partners at School of International Futures (SOIF), Wellbeing Economy Alliance Australia and Foundations for Tomorrow.org. This research began with an observation about how Australia's capacity to govern for the future is often described. Many complain that we're short-termist, that we're behind, that we don't innovate in how we govern for future generations. But how much does that actually hold true? The research tells a more complex story. Australia has built real foundations for long-term governance. The Future Fund. The Intergenerational Report. Stewardship. Measuring What Matters. Each has its limits. But each is also worth celebrating. ✨ We mapped 183 organisations, spoke with 31 leaders and experts, and used the School of International Futures (SOIF)'s own Foresight Governance Prism to assess maturity across an eleven-dimension taxonomy of the ecosystem. What we found is a fragmentation problem, not an absence problem. The infrastructure for long-term governance exists. But it's rarely connected, extended or operationalised in ways that let it actually shape the decisions it was built to support.
